McCain’s life experiences will suit road ahead

John McCain was not my first choice. Or even the second or third.

He'd be far more appealing with a Southern conservative as a running mate — former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, or Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, to name three.

But conservative running mate or not, Mitt Romney's class-act exit leaves McCain without serious challenge for the nomination. And as both Romney and McCain noted in same-day speeches to the Conservative Political Action Conference, this election is not about shades of gray. "Elections in this country are fought within margins of small differences," said McCain. "This one will not be. We are arguing about hugely consequential things."

Romney's departing words defined the immediate course for conservatives.

Politicos flex muscles in opponents’ areas

Politicians in Haryana have taken a fancy to slug it out in their opponents battlegrounds to make their presence felt.

The trend by now is so prevalent that holding a rally at their home turf has almost become a thing of the past. The trend has also caught the imagination of the man on the street, forcing the politicos to show their political muscle in their arch opponents area of operation.

Although senior politicians have been organising political performances outside their own constituencies or home districts in the past, these were either a part of a statewide political campaign like the one launched by late Devi Lal in 1985 against the Rajiv-Longowal accord or such events marked the end of campaigning before the assembly or parliamentary election in the state.

For several decades, Rohtak remained the first choice of all major political parties and their leaders for hosting campaign-end shows.

Get Schooled

These kids are going to get a very brutal wake-up call someday and the results ain't gonna be pretty at all.

In fact, we're already seeing the results of some of this stuff. Some of these people I see coming out of college now just can't believe it when they're told something is merely "good," because they've been told they're nothing less than fantastic all the time since birth … and heaven forbid if they hear something they do truly isn't even "good," but "not so good," to "bad" or even "horrible."

City may move homeless from underpass to shelter

Mayor Ray Nagin's administration appears to be preparing to move the city's biggest homeless colony, a highly visible collection of people and bedrolls just off Canal Street, to a Central City emergency shelter.

Some City Council members and leading advocates for the homeless say they are not aware of the plan, although the director of the New Orleans Mission confirmed that the city accepted his proposal on Friday.

Nagin alluded to a plan for the homeless last week during an appearance on WWL-TV. He said he had recently seen a man in the encampment on Claiborne Avenue beneath Interstate 10 "drinking beer and just flipping the bird to citizens."

Calling the scene "a mess," Nagin said that before the end of February, the city will begin enforcing its "habitation laws."

"We've got more mental cases out there," the mayor said.

Saban admits 'problem' on team

All-Southeastern Conference safety Rashad Johnson, a Tide team captain, was the latest in a string of Crimson Tide players who have been arrested, with five of the eight arrests coming on weekend trips to The Strip, a popular student hangout of bars and restaurants just west of Bryant-Denny Stadium on University Boulevard.

"It is a problem," Saban said at news conference called specifically to address the various off-the-field issues. "Our team needs to have better discipline (and) judgment. We cannot tolerate poor judgment. And regardless of how many people got arrested this weekend on The Strip, there was only one on ESPN. There was only one on Fox Sports. There was only one all over the state of Alabama on every newspaper."

Johnson's arrest at The Legacy for disorderly conduct was the fourth involving Tide football players at the local nightclub.

Animal activist convicted in Pa. stolen dog case gets probation

HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. - An animal activist convicted of stealing a dog from a Blair County couple was sentenced to a year's probation and 300 hours of community service.

A judge on Friday also ordered 43-year-old Tammy Grimes to pay court costs and to stop profiting from the sale of merchandise featuring images of the dog.

A jury in December convicted the Tyrone woman of theft and receiving stolen property. Grimes had said she took 19-year-old Jake in September 2006 after the animal had been chained outside for three days without food and water.

The dog was moved to a foster home and later died. The former owners say they never mistreated the dog.
