Council nixes building cat room at shelter

A proposal to build a new room for cats at Butte's animal shelter raised questions Wednesday evening about euthanasia and operating costs.Commissioners voted 8-4 to deny a request to build a second "free-roaming" room for cats at the Chelsea Bailey Animal Shelter, 699 Centennial Ave., but said they could reconsider the request after a director is hired. An ordinance restricting fireworks in city limits also was introduced and referred to the judiciary committee, which meets next week.Commissioners Cindi Shaw, Charlie O'Leary, Jim Fay and John Sorich supported the shelter project.Commissioners voting against the project said they wanted to put the request made by shelter director Erin Wall on hold until a new director is hired. The job posting for the director position ends Friday, and a new director could be hired around the end of the month, said Public Works Director John VanDaveer.

Legitimate request? Or is she milking it?

It grosses me out.

Not the idea of mothers bonding with their babies and providing them nutrition and other natural goodies for healthy, growing bodies. But the act of them doing so, anywhere in my visual range.

I am not a mother, I've never nursed, and I've never jumped out of bed for a 3 a.m. feeding.

With that full disclosure, my gender as well as my professional (if not maternal) instincts entitle me to weigh in on the so-called breast-feeding dilemma of a mother attending Harvard Medical School.

The details of the case are as follows:

Sophie Currier, who already has a Ph.D. from Harvard, sued the National Board of Medical Examiners so she could get extra break time during her daylong medical licensing exam to pump breast milk.

Some old wives' tales are far from true

As long as digestion has begun, you should be fine. Don't, however, combine swimming and eating. You could choke.

Coffee stunts your growth: No, it doesn't. But too much caffeine will have kids climbing the walls.

If you go outside with wet hair, you'll catch a cold: You're likely to be uncomfortable but colds are caused by viruses. People get them more often in winter because they're spread more easily indoors.

Reading in dim light hurts your eyes: Good lighting makes reading easier and prevents eye fatigue but dim light won't hurt you.

Too much TV is bad for your eyes: No, not even if you sit really close (something else mom warned you about). But researchers say kids whose normal weekly routine includes more than 10 hours of TV are more likely to be aggressive, chubby and slower to learn.

Coroner IDs Body Found In Forest Preserve

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. (CBS) ― The DuPage County Coroner's Office has positively identified the skeletal remains discovered in the Lyman Woods Nature Preserve on Thursday. The body was that of Daniel B. Smiechowski, 28, of Downers Grove. Smiechowski was reported missing to Downers Grove Police on March 16, 2007. At the time of the missing persons report, there was nothing to lead police investigators to believe that there was anything suspicious about Smiechowski's disappearance. The office utilized dental records to identify Smiechowski. Smiechowski's skeletal remains were found under accumulated snow and ice in a heavily wooded area of west suburban Downers Grove. Police received a 911 call just before 1:30 p.m. Thursday from workers clearing brush in Lyman Woods near 36th and Sterling Road in the western suburb to check on what appeared to be human skeletal remains about one-quarter mile inside the heavily wooded lot, police said.
