Food safety tips for globe-trotters

Sampling the foods of the world is one of the most satisfying aspects of travel. But while your palate may be game, your stomach isn't always up to the challenge. It's important to find a middle ground between sampling local cuisines and treating your belly well.

For starters, understand that American food isn't necessarily "safer" than food abroad; it's often simply that your innards are accustomed to it. One important difference is the use of more "natural" fertilizers abroad, which can carry bacteria that could cause intestinal distress — also known as traveler's tummy.

However, there are times when you may face special risks while traveling abroad. Outbreaks that have made headlines in recent years include avian influenza, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE or "mad cow disease").

Bill Conlin: Evidently, Clemens is in a pile of trouble

USED SYRINGES and bloody gauze typically make headlines only after washing up at the Jersey Shore. Beaches are closed while environmentalists and Chamber of Commerce types correctly hyperventilate.

It never occurred to me that anybody would hang on to used syringes, empty vials that once contained various steroids and bloody gauze wipes. Let alone hang on to them for what could be as long as 7 to 8 years. But that is what Brian McNamee told a congressional committee in a deposition.

In a startling TV show-and-tell yesterday at 5:37 p.m., McNamee's attorneys rolled out enough photos of grungy-looking medical waste after their appearance before a congressional committee to shut down Asbury Park for a month. There was even a crumpled beer can in which McNamee supposedly stored needles used to inject Roger Clemens and others.

Health offiicials worried about more possible cases of rabies

Seven people locally are receiving rabies shots and public health officials are looking for anyone else who may have been in contact with puppies at Pets R Us, also known as Feed Me More Pets, in Chesley since Jan. 3.

"There is a potential that during that period other pups at the Chesley location may been exposed to infectious animals," said Karen Sweiger, manager of the rabies program for the Grey Bruce Health Unit.

Sweiger said Monday the seven local people are receiving rabies shots, a series of five injections over 28 days, as a precautionary measure.

Each vaccine series costs $1,000, which is paid for by taxpayers.

Public Health officials, both locally and in the Toronto, Peel and York regions, continue to look for people who may have been exposed to puppies that were being sold on Jan.

Managing your business in a downturn

How Merck Healed Itself").

Another area to build on is personnel. It may seem counter-intuitive to pay bonuses when profits are falling, but sometimes it's the right thing to do, particularly if a specific unit is creaming the competition. Rewarding excellence - through new challenges, public recognition, and, yes, money - in bad times as well as good builds loyalty. In fact, a downturn can be an excellent time to poach; people who might have stuck with a company because of vested options or other monetary incentives may be more willing to consider joining your company when those vanish. In general, I am against cutting salaries as a first resort. If that has to happen, though, top management absolutely must suffer a cut too.

For boards, a downturn is an excellent time to take a hard look at CEO pay and ensure it is structured in a way that rewards genuine performance and does not simply piggyback on a rising market.

Small Goals Lead To Big Fitness Gains

Many people want to make changes in their bodies or fitness levels. They want to lose 15 pounds by spring, run a 5K or lower their blood pressure.

Those can be reachable challenges, but the key to getting there, experts say, is having smaller goals in between to ensure success from point A to point B.

Top 10 Boys' Teams

Marblehead at Wakefield (Saturday, 2:30 p.m.): It has no effect on the standings, but playing one of the top teams in the area should be a nice little warm-up for Marblehead before its last conference game of the season at Beverly.

Player to Watch

Rachel Konaxis, Beverly: The senior center was in on the ground floor of the Panthers program, playing with the boys before there was even a girls' team; last week, she became the squad's first-ever 100-point scorer.

I can find no reason why federal law is being waived for this except that many feel that Title IX, the gender equity law, applies only to how much money schools should be spending on school sports.

In a Cape Cod Times editorial today they took the position that it was a good idea. Well, they didn't really stick out their neck; they said it is worth considering.

My feeling is this: Schools should try single sex groupings it and see who it helps without tooting it all over the place as the answer. Results, in terms of test scores and emotional output should be studied. Doctoral dissertations should be encouraged to examine it and survey research should be funded to see how much, if at all, it helps. Finally, the question must be asked if it is worth setting aside Title IX and possibly the culture altering woman's movement to do it?

We need to know these things before we get too infatuated with separating boys and girls at school.
