Auto GM Adds Wiggle Room to 2010 Volt Deadline

If you go to their site they list the mpg as 24 town, 32 hwy. I'm saying big deal. I have a 93 Oldsmobile 88, it gets 25 town and 30 hwy. How is this hybrid an improvement? It's not. It's there to make people feel like their doing the environment good and there's no benefit from this vehicle at all. .

Player) injury was in the forefront of our minds," John Clougherty, supervisor of ACC men's basketball officials, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution after the game was postponed.

From offshore to off chore

Outsourcing isn't just for Bell Canada anymore. Ten years after the trend began with multinationals outsourcing computer coding and customer service to India's cheap, well-educated workforce, small businesses are jumping on the bandwagon. Right on their heels are overburdened ordinary people farming out the minutia of their lives.

Why should you call Bell Sympatico to speak to a customer service representative in India when your rep can call their rep for you?

"I think a lot of the professional world is overwhelmed and has enough disposable income to spend to gain a few hours of their week back," says Jed Wood, 30, a Web entrepreneur who hired a remote personal assistant in India when he moved to Chicago last summer. The assistant screened 50 apartment listings on Craigslist and set up appointments for viewing.

Highlight: Strategic Redeployment

It's time to change course.

That's why today we ask the president, his handpicked Iraq Study Group (led by former Secretary of State James Baker and former Indiana congressman Lee H. Hamilton), and congressional leaders to consider our reasoned, pragmatic plan to strategically redeploy our military forces in Iraq and around the region to fight our terrorist enemies in the most effective and most lethal fashion possible.

One year ago the Center for American Progress issued its first report calling for a responsible exit from Iraq as part of a balanced global strategy to make Americans safer. We reiterated that call six months later as subsequent events only underscored the need to act on our proposals. Today, the situation in Iraq is even more dire.

Violence in Iraq is spiraling out of control as it turns inward, with sectarian killings surpassing deaths from terrorist bombings and militias splintering the country.

Take food cues from Greek diet

The ingredients in Greek cuisine are described as food of the gods. When you dip into the stories of Greek mythology, the literature is rife with examples.

Milk from the goat Amaltheia was said to have nourished the great god Zeus, who was born in a cave on the island of Crete. According to myth, a bee nestled in that same sacred cave was the original source of Crete's delicious velvety honey. Citrus fruit was created by Gaea, the goddess of the earth, as a wedding gift to Zeus and Hera, and then closely guarded in the Garden of Hesperides, far from the inquisitive eyes of Minoan mortals.

Oregon, most states don't require reports of pharmacy mistakes

We didn't want to close up a community resource. We just want (pharmacists) to be competent."

When it comes to dispensing errors, Oregon faces the same problems as the rest of the country, Schnabel said:

Oregon pharmacies, like those elsewhere, depend heavily on technicians.

There are 4,446 licensed pharmacists in the state, and 6,178 pharmacy technicians.

Like most other states, Oregon does not require drug errors to be reported.

All 80 of the dispensing errors the board investigated last year came from consumer complaints. Of those, seven licensees were formally disciplined; 23 were required to attend a course on error reduction in lieu of discipline, 32 still are in the discipline process, and 18 were found to be unsubstantiated.

The board also issued 11 warnings about dispensing errors they discovered during site inspections.

Two Studies Cast Further Doubt on the Effectiveness of Low GI/GL Diets ...

DENVER, Feb. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- A study published in the September 2007 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition provides further evidence that the glycemic index (GI) of a diet is not important; when it comes to weight loss it is calories that count. This study adds to the growing body of evidence supporting the health benefits of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, including potatoes, according to the United States Potato Board.

Researchers from Harvard and the State University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil who worked independently from any food industry sponsors, sought to determine if a low GI diet would be more effective than a high GI diet for long-term weight loss in 203 overweight and obese women. Both diets included a mild energy restriction (i.e., 100-300 fewer calories per day) and had similar macronutrient distributions (i.e., carbohydrate, protein and fat); all that distinguished the two diets were the GIs of the foods.

Study says obese diabetics may be helped by surgery

Obese diabetic patients who underwent weight loss surgery were found to be five times more likely to gain control over their condition as opposed to people who did not go for the surgery. The study involved 60 obese patients with type 2 diabetes. Lead researcher Dr John Dixon and colleagues set out to analyze the benefits of stomach banding surgery on type 2 diabetes. All participants in the study had a body mass index greater than 30, but lower than 40. Any person having a BMI of over 30 is considered to be clinically obese. The participants were either allocated to the surgery group or the conventional therapy group, which stressed on diet and lifestyle changes. Overall 26 study participants or 43 percent experienced remission from diabetes at the end of two years. However 73 percent or 22 of the 30 in the surgery group experienced remission as compared to 13 percent or 4 out of 30 people in the conventional-therapy group.
